Juice Wrld

Juice Wrld is a 19-year-old artist from Calumet Park in Illinois who has recently been blowing up on SoundCloud. On February 25, Cole Bennett released a music video that he directed for Juice Wrld’s song All Girls Are The Same.  Since the release of this video, Juice Wrld has been gaining heavy clout online and his social media following is increasing rapidly.

Cole Bennett seems to have that effect on artists nowadays, but this song wouldn’t have blown up if there wasn’t also raw talent behind it. Juice Wrld is a part of the recent shift in hip-hop where we are seeing artists explore deeper emotion in their work and are producing with a darker emotional vibe. This movement gained popularity with artists such as Lil Uzi Vert on Luv is Rage and recently with XXXTentacion’s 17 album. Male artists in hip-hop are becoming more comfortable rapping about emotional topics with slower beats and Juice Wrld is a young artist who is taking this theme to new heights.

Although he only has 1 mixtape out on Soundcloud, he has already signed a deal with Interscope Records that is valued at around $3,000,000. Being the same age as Juice I must say I’m pretty salty but that’s life I guess.

Lucid Dreams

On his popular track Lucid Dreams,  Juice Wrld explores the complications of relationships and the pain of losing someone you loved. The delivery and cadences of this song reminds me of early 2000’s punk rock music such as Panic! At the Disco’s “I Write Sins Not Tragedies”.

All Girls Are the Same

Another song that explores similar topics is All Girls Are the Same, but this song seems to explore the topic of letting go of girls who have hurt him, by any means necessary.

What I love most about Juice Wrld’s music is that it has raw emotion attached to it and doesn’t promote the /senseless/ use of drugs and alcohol. When he talks about using substances it typically has the context of being used to drown out emotions which is accurate to the typical use of these substances. When listening to Juice Wrld I feel the emotions he is feeling, which is difficult for an artist to convey to his listeners.

I am very excited to see where he goes next with his music and am eagerly awaiting the release of his first studio album. I have complete faith that it will be fire af.
